Chicken skewers, whether raw and marinated or pre-cooked, are a versatile and popular protein choice for quick meals and grilling. Proper storage is absolutely crucial to maintain their succulent flavor, prevent bacterial growth, and ensure food safety from your kitchen to your plate.
Storage Time
Raw chicken skewers should be stored in the coldest part of your refrigerator for 1–2 days. Cooked chicken skewers can last safely for 3–4 days when properly chilled. For longer preservation, raw or cooked chicken skewers can be frozen for up to 3–4 months while maintaining optimal taste and texture, and safely for up to 6 months.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at a consistent temperature of 0–4°C (32–40°F) for optimal safety and freshness. For freezing, maintain a steady temperature of -18°C (0°F) or colder to prevent freezer burn and preserve quality.
Freezing
To freeze chicken skewers, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, then place them in an airtight freezer-safe bag or container to prevent freezer burn and moisture loss. For best results, freeze individual skewers separately if possible to avoid them sticking together. When ready to use, thaw frozen chicken skewers slowly in the refrigerator overnight. For quicker thawing, place them in a sealed bag under cold running water, changing the water every 30 minutes. Always cook thawed chicken skewers immediately and never refreeze raw chicken that has been thawed.
Signs of Spoilage
- A distinct sour, pungent, or ammonia-like odor is a primary indicator that chicken skewers have spoiled and are no longer safe to consume.
- Look for changes in color, such as a dull, greyish, or greenish hue, especially if the chicken was originally pink or white. Any dark spots or mold growth are also clear signs of spoilage.
- A slimy or sticky texture on the surface of the chicken is another unmistakable sign of bacterial growth and spoilage, indicating it must be discarded immediately.
