Delicate cream puffs, also known as profiteroles, are airy choux pastry shells filled with luscious cream. To best preserve their delightful texture and flavor, prompt refrigeration is key, especially after they've been filled.
Storage Time
Best enjoyed within 1-2 days when refrigerated; freezing is possible for longer storage.
Temperature
Store refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–40°F).
Freezing
Unfilled cream puff shells can be frozen for up to 2 months in an airtight container. For filled cream puffs, freezing is not recommended as the cream and pastry texture can degrade significantly upon thawing. If freezing shells, thaw them at room temperature and briefly warm in a low oven (around 150°C/300°F) for a few minutes to restore crispness before filling.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour or off smell emanating from the cream filling.
- The pastry becoming soggy, mushy, or excessively sticky.
- Visible mold growth on the pastry or filling.
