Fresh tomatillos, also known as husk tomatoes, are a staple in Mexican cuisine, offering a unique tart and slightly citrusy flavor. Properly storing these vibrant green fruits ensures their optimal freshness for your favorite salsas, sauces, and stews.
Storage Time
Up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator, 6-12 months when frozen.
Temperature
Store in the refrigerator at 0–4°C (32–40°F) for best results.
Freezing
To freeze fresh tomatillos, first remove their papery husks and wash them thoroughly. You can freeze them whole or chopped. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid, then transfer to airtight freezer bags or containers. Frozen tomatillos are best used in cooked dishes like sauces and soups, as their texture may soften upon thawing. Thaw them in the refrigerator overnight before use.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft or mushy spots on the fruit's surface.
- A strong, unpleasant, or fermented odor.
- Visible mold growth, often fuzzy and white or green.
