Frozen artichoke hearts maintain optimal quality for 10-12 months in the freezer. Once thawed, they should be consumed within 3-4 days when kept refrigerated.
Temperature
Keep frozen artichoke hearts at a consistent temperature of 0°F (-18°C) or colder. After thawing, store them in the refrigerator at 34-40°F (1-4°C).
Freezing
Frozen artichoke hearts are already in their ideal long-term storage state. To thaw safely, transfer the sealed package to the refrigerator overnight, allowing them to defrost gradually. For quicker thawing, place the sealed bag under cold running water until softened. It is generally not recommended to refreeze thawed artichoke hearts, as the freezing and thawing process can significantly alter their delicate texture, often resulting in a mushy consistency upon re-thawing.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour, fermented, or off-putting odor indicates spoilage, moving beyond their naturally mild, earthy scent.
- After thawing, if the artichoke hearts appear excessively slimy, mushy, or have an unusually soft texture, they are likely past their prime.
- Visible mold growth, unusual darkening, or discoloration (beyond their natural pale green to yellowish hue) are clear signs that the artichoke hearts should be discarded.
