Orecchiette, meaning 'little ears' in Italian, are delightful ear-shaped pasta perfect for capturing sauces. Store uncooked orecchiette pasta in its original packaging or an airtight container to maintain its freshness and prevent moisture absorption.
Storage Time
Uncooked orecchiette pasta can last indefinitely in the pantry if stored properly, though quality may slightly diminish after 2 years. Cooked orecchiette pasta will last 3–4 days in the refrigerator.
Temperature
Store uncooked orecchiette pasta in a cool, dry place, ideally between 15–20°C (59–68°F). Refrigerate cooked orecchiette pasta at or below 4°C (40°F).
Freezing
Uncooked orecchiette pasta freezes exceptionally well. To freeze, place dry pasta in freezer-safe bags or containers, removing as much air as possible. It can be cooked directly from frozen, though cooking time may increase slightly. Cooked orecchiette pasta can also be frozen in portions, ideally with a bit of sauce to prevent drying out; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold growth on the pasta.
- An off, musty, or rancid smell.
- Changes in texture, such as becoming unusually brittle or soft (for uncooked pasta).
