A convenient and delicious pre-cooked meal, rotisserie chicken requires careful handling and proper storage to maintain its succulent flavor and ensure food safety. Understanding its shelf life and optimal storage conditions is key to enjoying your leftovers safely and reducing food waste.
Storage Time
3–4 days in the refrigerator, up to 4 months in the freezer for best quality, though safe for up to 6 months.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at or below 4°C (40°F) immediately after cooling. Cooked poultry should not be left at room temperature for more than two hours.
Freezing
To freeze rotisserie chicken, first remove all the meat from the bones. Shred or dice the chicken into meal-sized portions. Place the chicken into airtight freezer-safe bags, removing as much air as possible, or rigid freezer containers to prevent freezer burn. Label with the date. When ready to use, thaw frozen chicken overnight in the refrigerator. For quicker thawing, use the defrost setting on a microwave or place the sealed bag in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes. Always reheat thawed chicken thoroughly to an internal temperature of 74°C (165°F).
Signs of Spoilage
- A distinct sour, pungent, or off-putting odor, which is a clear indicator that the chicken has gone bad.
- A slimy or sticky texture on the surface of the chicken, rather than its usual firm and moist feel.
- Any visible mold growth, discoloration such as a dull gray or green tint, or a general faded appearance compared to its fresh, golden-brown color.
