Sesame chicken is a beloved Chinese-American dish featuring crispy fried chicken pieces coated in a rich, sweet, and savory sesame sauce. To preserve its delightful flavor and tender texture, proper storage is essential for enjoying leftovers safely and preventing foodborne illness.
Storage Time
Enjoy freshly cooked sesame chicken within 3 to 4 days when stored properly in the refrigerator, or extend its life by freezing for up to 3 months for optimal taste and texture, and safely up to 6 months.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at a consistent temperature of 0–4°C (32–40°F) to inhibit bacterial growth and maintain freshness.
Freezing
Sesame chicken freezes remarkably well. First, allow the cooked chicken to cool completely to room temperature within two hours of preparation. Transfer individual portions into shallow, airtight freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, pressing out as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. Label with the date. To thaw, transfer frozen sesame chicken to the refrigerator overnight, or use the defrost setting on your microwave. Reheat thoroughly to an internal temperature of 74°C (165°F) in an oven, microwave, or on the stovetop, adding a splash of water or broth if the sauce seems too thick to restore moisture.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour, rancid, or otherwise unpleasant odor, distinct from its original sweet and savory aroma.
- A slimy or sticky texture on the chicken pieces or in the sauce, indicating bacterial growth.
- Any visible mold, which may appear as fuzzy green, black, or white spots on the chicken or sauce.
- A dull, faded, or unusually dark color in the chicken or sauce, suggesting degradation.
