Delightful sugar cookies, perfect for any occasion, can be enjoyed for longer with proper storage. Learn how to keep these sweet treats fresh and delicious, whether you're planning ahead or dealing with leftovers.
Storage Time
Store unfrosted sugar cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. Frosted sugar cookies are best consumed within 2-3 days at room temperature or up to 1 week in the refrigerator. Properly frozen, they can last for 2-3 months.
Temperature
Store at room temperature (18-22°C) for unfrosted cookies. Refrigerate frosted cookies if the frosting contains dairy or cream cheese.
Freezing
Sugar cookies freeze exceptionally well, both baked and unbaked. For baked cookies, ensure they are completely cooled and wrap them individually in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Unbaked cookie dough can be portioned into balls, frozen on a baking sheet until firm, then transferred to a freezer bag. Thaw baked cookies at room temperature for a few hours. Unbaked dough can be baked directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold growth, especially on frosted cookies.
- A stale, hard, or crumbly texture that doesn't soften.
- An off or sour smell, particularly noticeable in frosted varieties.
