Basbousa, also known as Hareesa, is a traditional Middle Eastern semolina cake soaked in sweet syrup, often flavored with rose water or orange blossom water. This delightful dessert, rich with nuts and a tender crumb, is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored to prolong its deliciousness.
Storage Time
Best enjoyed within 2-3 days at room temperature, up to 5-7 days when refrigerated.
Temperature
Store at room temperature (18-22°C) if consuming within 2 days. For longer storage, refrigerate at 0-4°C.
Freezing
Basbousa freezes remarkably well, preserving its texture and flavor for up to 2-3 months. Ensure the cake is completely cooled before wrapping it tightly in plastic wrap, followed by a layer of aluminum foil or placing it in an airtight freezer-safe container. To thaw, remove from the freezer and let it defrost at room temperature for several hours, or overnight in the refrigerator. You can gently warm slices in a low oven or microwave for a fresh-baked feel, though some slight moisture loss might occur.
Signs of Spoilage
- Development of mold on the surface, especially if stored improperly.
- A sour or off odor emanating from the cake.
- A slimy or sticky texture that wasn't present initially.
