Enjoy the creamy, slightly sweet, and buttery flavor of Havarti cheese, a delightful Danish semi-soft cheese perfect for sandwiches, charcuterie boards, or melting into your favorite dishes. Proper storage ensures its delicious taste and texture remain at their best.
Storage Time
Unopened: up to 6 months in a cool pantry. Opened: 3-4 weeks in the refrigerator.
Temperature
Store unopened Havarti in a cool, dry pantry (below 20°C). Once opened, keep refrigerated at 0–4°C.
Freezing
While Havarti cheese can be frozen to extend its shelf life, freezing may alter its texture, making it more crumbly and less smooth upon thawing. For best results, wrap the cheese tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil or a freezer-safe bag to prevent freezer burn. Thaw slowly in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours before use. It's ideal for cooking applications after freezing, rather than for slicing.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold growth (any color other than the natural rind, if applicable)
- A sour or ammoniated smell
- A slimy or sticky texture on the surface
