A calzone is essentially a pizza turnover, filled with cheese, meats, and vegetables. Proper storage is key to maintaining its delicious flavor and preventing foodborne illnesses.
Storage Time
2–3 days in the refrigerator, or up to 2–3 months in the freezer.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at 4°C (40°F) or below to maintain freshness and safety.
Freezing
Calzones freeze well. Allow the calzone to cool completely before wrapping it tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil, or placing it in a freezer-safe container. For best results, freeze individual portions. To thaw, transfer the frozen calzone to the refrigerator overnight or bake directly from frozen, adding extra cooking time. Note that freezing may slightly alter the texture of the crust.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off-putting smell
- Slimy or sticky texture on the crust or filling
- Visible mold growth
- Discoloration of the filling ingredients
