Candied bacon, a delightful sweet and savory treat, combines crispy bacon with a caramelized sugar glaze, often enhanced with spices. Proper storage is crucial to maintain its irresistible crunch and prevent spoilage, ensuring every bite is as delicious as intended. Learn the best ways to keep your candied bacon fresh and safe for enjoyment.
Storage Time
Candied bacon can be safely stored in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. For extended freshness, it can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–40°F) in an airtight container to prevent moisture absorption and maintain crispness.
Freezing
To freeze candied bacon, arrange individual pieces in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet and flash freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer the pieces to an airtight freezer-safe bag or container, removing as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn and preserve its texture. Thaw frozen candied bacon in the refrigerator overnight. For best texture, gently reheat in a low oven (around 150°C or 300°F) for a few minutes until crisp, or enjoy at room temperature. While freezing helps preserve it, the texture might become slightly less crisp upon thawing, but the flavor will remain excellent.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour, rancid, or off-putting odor, distinct from its usual smoky-sweet aroma, indicates spoilage.
- The presence of a slimy or sticky film on the surface, or if the bacon feels unusually soft and mushy instead of firm and crisp.
- Any discoloration such as green, gray, or fuzzy mold spots appearing on the bacon or glaze is a clear sign it has gone bad.
