A classic Neapolitan Margherita pizza features a thin, soft crust topped with fresh tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and basil leaves. This simple yet flavorful pizza is best enjoyed fresh, but proper storage can extend its shelf life.
Storage Time
1–2 days in the refrigerator, up to 2–3 months in the freezer
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at 4°C (40°F) or below.
Freezing
To freeze Margherita pizza, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil, or place it in a freezer-safe bag to prevent freezer burn. For best results, freeze individual slices. To thaw, transfer the frozen pizza to the refrigerator overnight or bake directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time. Be aware that freezing may slightly alter the texture of the crust and cheese.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or unpleasant smell
- Slimy or moldy appearance on the crust, sauce, or cheese
- Discoloration of the ingredients, especially the tomato sauce or mozzarella
