Feta cheese, a brined curd cheese traditionally made in Greece, offers a delightful salty and tangy flavor profile. Properly stored, this versatile cheese can elevate salads, pastries, and countless other culinary creations.
Storage Time
Unopened feta in brine: 1-2 months past sell-by date. Opened feta in brine: 2-3 weeks. Opened feta not in brine: 3-5 days.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–40°F). If feta is packed in brine, ensure it remains submerged.
Freezing
Feta cheese can be frozen, but its texture will change upon thawing, becoming more crumbly and less creamy. For best results, freeze feta in its brine if possible, or wrap it tightly in plastic wrap followed by a layer of aluminum foil or a freezer-safe bag. Thaw slowly in the refrigerator overnight. Frozen feta is best used in cooked dishes where texture changes are less noticeable.
Signs of Spoilage
- Unpleasant, sour, or ammonia-like smell.
- Slimy or sticky texture.
- Visible mold growth (any color other than the natural white of the cheese).
- Significant discoloration or darkening.
