Halloumi, a semi-hard, unripened brined cheese, is a culinary delight known for its high melting point, making it perfect for grilling and frying. Properly stored, this versatile cheese can maintain its delightful texture and flavor for optimal enjoyment in various dishes.
Storage Time
Unopened: up to 12 months in pantry (cool, dry place). Opened: 2-3 weeks in the refrigerator.
Temperature
Store unopened halloumi in a cool, dry pantry away from direct sunlight. Once opened, refrigerate at 0–4°C (32–40°F).
Freezing
Yes, halloumi can be frozen to extend its shelf life, though freezing may slightly alter its texture, making it a bit more crumbly upon thawing. To freeze, drain any brine, wrap the cheese tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil or place in a freezer-safe bag. Thaw slowly in the refrigerator overnight before use. It's best used in cooked dishes after freezing, as the texture change is less noticeable.
Signs of Spoilage
- A strong, sour, or ammonia-like smell.
- Development of a slimy or sticky surface.
- Visible mold growth (any color other than the original white or pale yellow).
