Enjoy the unique, bold flavor of licorice by storing it properly to maintain its chewy texture and rich taste. Whether it's classic black licorice twists or flavored varieties, proper storage ensures a delightful confectionery experience.
Storage Time
Unopened: Up to 1 year in pantry. Opened: 2-3 months in pantry, 6-12 months frozen.
Temperature
Store in a cool, dry place, ideally between 15-21°C (60-70°F). Avoid extreme heat or humidity.
Freezing
Licorice can be frozen to extend its shelf life significantly, especially if it's a large quantity or you want to preserve it for longer. For best results, wrap the licorice tightly in plastic wrap, then place it in an airtight freezer bag or container to prevent freezer burn and odor absorption. To thaw, remove the licorice from the freezer and let it come to room temperature gradually on the counter for a few hours. Freezing may slightly alter the texture, making it a bit firmer, but the flavor should remain largely intact.
Signs of Spoilage
- Hardening and becoming brittle, indicating it has dried out.
- Development of a stale or off odor, suggesting it has absorbed other smells.
- Visible mold growth, which is a clear sign of spoilage and should not be consumed.
