Preserve the delightful melt and mild flavor of your low-moisture mozzarella cheese with proper storage. This versatile cheese, perfect for pizzas and baked dishes, maintains its quality best when kept cool and dry.
Storage Time
Unopened: up to 6 months in pantry (check best-by date). Opened: 2–3 weeks in the refrigerator.
Temperature
Unopened: Store in a cool, dry pantry below 20°C (68°F). Opened: Keep refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–40°F).
Freezing
Low-moisture mozzarella cheese freezes exceptionally well, making it ideal for stocking up. For best results, shred or cube the cheese before freezing. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, then place it in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. Frozen mozzarella can be stored for up to 6 months. Thaw slowly in the refrigerator overnight before using. While the texture may become slightly crumbly after freezing, it remains perfectly suitable for cooking and melting in hot dishes.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour or ammonia-like smell.
- A slimy or sticky texture on the surface.
- Visible mold growth, which can appear as fuzzy green, blue, or black spots.
