Medium-grain rice, a versatile pantry staple, offers a delightful balance between the chewiness of short-grain and the fluffiness of long-grain varieties. Properly stored, this essential ingredient can elevate countless culinary creations, from comforting risottos to flavorful pilafs.
Storage Time
Up to 2 years in a cool, dry pantry; cooked rice lasts 3–4 days in the refrigerator; frozen cooked rice can last up to 6 months.
Temperature
Store uncooked rice in a cool, dry place, ideally between 15-21°C (59-70°F). Cooked rice should be refrigerated at or below 4°C (40°F).
Freezing
Cooked medium-grain rice freezes exceptionally well. Allow cooked rice to cool completely before portioning it into airtight freezer bags or containers. To thaw, refrigerate overnight or gently reheat in a microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of water to restore moisture and texture. Freezing may slightly alter the texture, making it a bit softer.
Signs of Spoilage
- Unpleasant, musty, or rancid odor.
- Visible mold growth, often appearing as fuzzy spots of various colors.
- Clumping or stickiness in uncooked rice, indicating moisture absorption and potential spoilage.
