Queso fresco, a delightful fresh Mexican cheese, offers a mild, slightly salty flavor and crumbly texture, making it a versatile ingredient for countless culinary creations. Its delicate nature requires proper storage to maintain its optimal freshness and taste.
Storage Time
Enjoy queso fresco within 5-7 days of opening for the best quality; unopened, it can last up to 2 weeks past its sell-by date when refrigerated.
Temperature
Store queso fresco in the refrigerator at a consistent temperature between 0-4°C (32-40°F).
Freezing
While queso fresco can be frozen to extend its shelf life, freezing may alter its texture, making it more crumbly and less creamy upon thawing. To freeze, wrap the cheese tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil or place it in a freezer-safe bag, removing as much air as possible. Thaw slowly in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours before use. It's best suited for cooked dishes after freezing.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour or off odor that is distinctly different from its usual mild scent.
- A slimy or sticky texture on the surface of the cheese.
- Visible mold growth, which can appear as green, blue, or pink fuzzy patches.
