Enjoy the vibrant tang of homemade rhubarb compote, a versatile fruit preserve perfect for breakfast pastries, desserts, or as a savory accompaniment. Properly stored, this delightful compote retains its fresh flavor and beautiful color for extended periods.
Storage Time
Up to 1 week in the refrigerator once opened; up to 12 months if properly canned and stored in a cool, dark pantry.
Temperature
Store refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–40°F) after opening. Unopened canned compote should be stored in a cool, dark, and dry pantry.
Freezing
Rhubarb compote freezes exceptionally well, preserving its delightful tartness and texture. Allow the compote to cool completely, then transfer it into airtight freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, leaving a small headspace for expansion. For best quality, consume within 8-12 months. To thaw, place the frozen compote in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for a few hours. Some slight separation may occur upon thawing, which can be easily stirred back in.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold growth on the surface or edges.
- An off, sour, or fermented smell.
- A slimy or unusually watery texture.
