Proper storage is crucial to maintain its aromatic qualities and prevent spoilage, whether it's in its dry, roasted form or prepared as a beverage. Storage Time
Dry, roasted chicory root (whole or ground) can last 6-12 months in a cool, dark pantry when unopened, and 3-6 months once opened and stored in an airtight container. For brewed chicory beverage, it will keep safely for 3-5 days in the refrigerator.
Temperature
Dry roasted chicory root should be stored in a cool, dark place, ideally below 20°C (68°F), away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Brewed chicory beverage must be kept refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–39°F) immediately after cooling.
Freezing
Dry roasted chicory root can be frozen to extend its shelf life significantly. Place it in a heavy-duty freezer bag or an airtight, freezer-safe container, removing as much air as possible, and it can last for 1-2 years. No special defrosting is needed; it can be used directly from frozen. Brewed chicory beverage can also be frozen in ice cube trays or freezer-safe containers for up to 3-6 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight or use frozen cubes directly in hot water for a quick brew.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold Growth: Any visible fuzzy or discolored spots, especially if the dry root has been exposed to moisture.
- Off-Smell or Flavor: A sour, musty, or unusually bitter aroma or taste, indicating rancidity or bacterial growth, particularly in brewed chicory.
- Clumping or Hardening: For dry, ground chicory, significant clumping or a rock-hard texture suggests moisture absorption and potential spoilage.
