White onions, known for their crisp texture and pungent flavor, are a versatile kitchen staple. Proper storage is key to preserving their freshness and preventing premature spoilage, ensuring you get the most out of this essential aromatic.
Storage Time
Up to 2 weeks in a cool, dark pantry; 3–4 weeks when refrigerated.
Temperature
Ideal pantry temperature is between 7–15°C (45–60°F). Refrigerated onions should be kept at 0–4°C (32–40°F).
Freezing
White onions can be frozen for extended preservation. Chop or slice them, spread in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze individually, then transfer to airtight freezer bags or containers. Frozen onions are best used in cooked dishes as their texture will soften upon thawing. To thaw, place them in the refrigerator overnight or use them directly from frozen in recipes.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft or mushy spots developing on the surface.
- A strong, unpleasant, or sour odor.
- Visible mold growth, often appearing as fuzzy green or black patches.
