Barfi is a dense, milk-based sweet confection originating from the Indian subcontinent. Typically made with milk solids, sugar, and flavorings like cardamom or nuts, it's a delightful treat best enjoyed fresh. Proper storage is key to preserving its rich flavor and delicate texture.
Storage Time
3–4 days at room temperature, 1–2 weeks in the refrigerator, up to 2 months in the freezer.
Temperature
Ideally stored in a cool, dry place at room temperature (18-22°C) or refrigerated at 0-4°C.
Freezing
Barfi freezes exceptionally well, maintaining its flavor and texture for up to two months. Wrap individual pieces tightly in plastic wrap, then place them in an airtight container or freezer bag. To thaw, unwrap the barfi and let it come to room temperature for about 30-60 minutes. Avoid microwaving as it can alter the texture.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour or off smell, indicating fermentation.
- A sticky or overly soft texture, suggesting spoilage.
- Visible mold growth, which is a clear sign of contamination.
