Store uncooked brown rice in a cool, dry pantry to maintain its nutty flavor and nutritional integrity. Properly stored, this whole grain staple offers a wealth of fiber and essential nutrients for healthy meals.
Storage Time
Up to 6 months in the pantry, 1-2 days cooked in the refrigerator, up to 6 months frozen when cooked.
Temperature
Pantry: Cool, dry place (ideally 15-20°C). Cooked: Refrigerate at 0-4°C.
Freezing
Cooked brown rice freezes exceptionally well. Allow cooked rice to cool completely before portioning it into airtight containers or freezer bags. To thaw, refrigerate overnight or gently reheat from frozen in a microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of water to restore moisture. Freezing may slightly alter the texture, making it a bit softer, but it remains perfectly safe and delicious for cooking.
Signs of Spoilage
- A rancid or stale odor, indicating the natural oils have oxidized.
- Visible mold growth, especially on cooked rice.
- A slimy or sticky texture, particularly noticeable in cooked rice that has been stored too long.
