Freshly chopped chili peppers, bursting with vibrant flavor and heat, are a versatile ingredient for enhancing any culinary creation. Proper storage is key to preserving their pungent aroma and spicy kick for your favorite dishes.
Storage Time
3–5 days in the refrigerator, up to 12 months when frozen.
Temperature
Store refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–40°F).
Freezing
Chopped chili peppers freeze exceptionally well, retaining much of their flavor and heat. For best results, spread the chopped peppers in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to airtight freezer bags or containers, removing as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. They can be used directly from frozen in cooked dishes, or thawed in the refrigerator for a few hours if a firmer texture is desired. Note that thawed peppers may be softer than fresh ones.
Signs of Spoilage
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Foul or fermented odor
- Visible mold growth (white, green, or black fuzzy patches)
