Freshly chopped chives offer a delicate oniony flavor, perfect for garnishing soups, salads, and egg dishes. Proper storage is key to preserving their vibrant green color and aromatic essence.
Storage Time
3–5 days in the refrigerator, up to 6 months when frozen.
Temperature
Store refrigerated chives in the crisper drawer at 0–4°C (32–40°F).
Freezing
To freeze chopped chives, wash and thoroughly dry them. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid, then transfer to an airtight container or freezer bag. This method prevents clumping. Frozen chives are best used in cooked dishes as their texture will soften upon thawing. Thaw by placing the desired amount in the refrigerator for a few hours.
Signs of Spoilage
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Yellowing or browning of the green leaves
- Foul or fermented odor
