Fresh scallions, also known as green onions or spring onions, are a versatile allium that adds a mild, oniony zest to countless culinary creations. Proper storage is key to preserving their crisp texture and vibrant flavor for your favorite recipes.
Storage Time
Fresh scallions can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 to 2 weeks when kept properly. For longer preservation, they can be frozen for up to 6 months.
Temperature
Store fresh scallions in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator, ideally between 0-4°C (32-40°F).
Freezing
To freeze fresh scallions, wash and thoroughly dry them, then chop them into desired sizes. You can freeze them loosely on a baking sheet before transferring to an airtight freezer bag or container to prevent clumping. Frozen scallions are best used in cooked dishes like soups, stews, or stir-fries, as their texture will soften upon thawing. Thaw them overnight in the refrigerator or add them directly to your cooking.
