Properly storing uncooked long-grain white rice is key to maintaining its quality and preventing spoilage. This versatile pantry staple, when kept in optimal conditions, can last for an extended period, ensuring you always have a foundation for delicious meals.
Storage Time
Up to 2 years in a cool, dry pantry; cooked rice lasts 3–4 days in the refrigerator.
Temperature
Store uncooked rice in a cool, dry place, ideally between 15-21°C (59-70°F). Refrigerate cooked rice at 0-4°C (32-40°F).
Freezing
Uncooked long-grain white rice can be frozen to extend its shelf life significantly, though it's rarely necessary due to its long pantry life. Cooked rice freezes exceptionally well. To freeze cooked rice, cool it completely, then portion it into airtight containers or freezer bags, removing as much air as possible. Thaw frozen cooked rice overnight in the refrigerator or gently reheat it from frozen in a microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of water. Freezing cooked rice may slightly alter its texture, making it a bit softer upon reheating.
Signs of Spoilage
- Unpleasant, musty, or rancid odor.
- Visible signs of insect infestation (weevils, moths).
- Clumping or mold growth, especially if exposed to moisture.
