Preserve the delightful flavor and creamy texture of your organic cheese by following proper storage guidelines. Understanding how to best keep your artisanal and natural cheeses fresh ensures you can enjoy their full culinary potential for longer.
Storage Time
Hard cheeses: 2-4 weeks after opening. Semi-hard cheeses: 1-2 weeks after opening. Soft cheeses: 3-7 days after opening. Unopened cheese: Check best-by date.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–40°F) to maintain optimal freshness and prevent spoilage.
Freezing
Freezing organic cheese is possible, especially for hard or semi-hard varieties intended for cooking. Wrap cheese tightly in plastic wrap, then in foil or a freezer bag to prevent freezer burn. Thaw slowly in the refrigerator overnight. Note that texture may become crumbly or dry after freezing, making it best suited for melting in recipes rather than serving on a cheese board.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold growth (beyond the natural rind of some cheeses)
- Offensive or sour odor
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Discoloration or chalky appearance
