Rice milk, a dairy-free alternative crafted from rice, offers a light and subtly sweet flavor perfect for cereal, smoothies, or baking. Stored properly, this plant-based beverage can maintain its quality for extended periods, ensuring you always have a versatile ingredient on hand.
Storage Time
Once opened, refrigerated rice milk typically lasts for 5–7 days. Unopened, shelf-stable rice milk can last for several months past the best-by date if stored in a cool, dry place.
Temperature
Store unopened, shelf-stable rice milk in a cool, dry pantry (ideally between 15-25°C or 59-77°F). Once opened, always keep refrigerated at or below 4°C (40°F).
Freezing
While rice milk can be frozen, its texture may change upon thawing, often becoming slightly grainy or separated. To freeze, pour the rice milk into freezer-safe containers, leaving some headspace for expansion. Thaw slowly in the refrigerator overnight. Shake well before consuming, as some separation is normal. Frozen rice milk is best used for cooking or baking rather than drinking directly.
Signs of Spoilage
- A sour or off odor, distinct from its usual mild scent.
- Visible mold growth, which can appear as fuzzy spots of various colors.
- A significantly thickened or curdled texture, indicating bacterial activity.
