Romaine lettuce, celebrated for its crisp texture and slightly bitter, yet sweet flavor, is a beloved ingredient in fresh salads and wraps. Mastering its proper storage is essential for maintaining its vibrant green leaves and satisfying crunch, which significantly extends its freshness and helps reduce food waste.
Storage Time
7-10 days in the fridge for whole heads, 3-5 days for chopped lettuce. Not recommended for freezing to retain fresh quality.
Temperature
Keep refrigerated at a cool 0–4°C (32–40°F) to preserve its crispness and prevent premature wilting.
Signs of Spoilage
- Wilting and Limpness: The once firm and crisp leaves become soft, droopy, and lose their structural integrity, indicating a significant loss of moisture and freshness.
- Discoloration: Healthy green leaves may develop yellow, brown, or dark spots, particularly along the edges or ribs, signaling the onset of decay.
- Slimy Texture: A sticky or slimy film on the surface of the leaves is a clear and unmistakable sign of bacterial growth and advanced spoilage, often accompanied by an off-putting odor.
- Sour or Pungent Odor: Fresh Romaine has a mild, earthy scent. If it emits a strong, sour, or unpleasant smell, it is definitely past its prime and should be discarded immediately.
