Preserve the nutritional goodness of skim milk powder by storing it correctly. This versatile ingredient is a pantry staple for baking, cooking, and reconstituting into a low-fat milk beverage.
Storage Time
Up to 18-24 months in a cool, dry pantry when stored properly; once reconstituted, it lasts 3-4 days in the refrigerator.
Temperature
Store in a cool, dry place, ideally between 15-25°C (59-77°F). Once reconstituted, refrigerate at 0-4°C (32-40°F).
Freezing
While not typically recommended for freezing in its powdered form as it can affect texture and solubility, if you must freeze it, ensure it's in an airtight, moisture-proof container or heavy-duty freezer bag. Thaw completely at room temperature before use. Freezing reconstituted skim milk is not advised as it can lead to separation and a grainy texture.
Signs of Spoilage
- Unpleasant, sour, or rancid odor.
- Clumping or caking that doesn't break apart easily, indicating moisture absorption.
- Discoloration, such as yellowing or browning, especially if stored improperly.
