Yellow split peas are a versatile and nutritious dried legume, cherished for their creamy texture in soups, stews, and dals. Proper storage is essential to maintain their quality, nutritional value, and ensure they remain a reliable pantry staple for countless delicious meals.
Storage Time
Dried yellow split peas can last 2-5 years in the pantry. Once cooked, they will keep for 3-4 days in the refrigerator and up to 6-8 months in the freezer.
Temperature
Store dried yellow split peas in a cool, dark, and dry place, ideally at a consistent room temperature below 20°C (68°F). Cooked split peas must be refrigerated at 0–4°C (32–39°F).
Freezing
Cooked yellow split peas freeze exceptionally well. Allow them to cool completely to room temperature before portioning into airtight, freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Ensure minimal air exposure to prevent freezer burn. Label with the date. To use, thaw overnight in the refrigerator or reheat directly from frozen on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of water or broth if needed. Freezing may result in a slightly softer texture, but they remain perfect for purees, soups, and stews.
Signs of Spoilage
- Presence of mold, which may appear as fuzzy patches or discoloration (green, black, or white spots) on the peas.
- An unpleasant, musty, sour, or off-odor, indicating bacterial growth or moisture damage.
- Significant changes in texture, such as clumping, excessive dustiness, or a slimy feel when cooked.
- Evidence of pantry pests like weevils, beetles, or their larvae, or small holes in the peas themselves.
